Have you ever seen someone waste their life?
We have one life with no spare parts. Some choices can completely change a life into something they never imagined.
Think of people who commit a crime and are sentenced to life imprisonment or death.
Think of people whose lives are destroyed due to drugs, alcohol, or other harmful habits.
Think of the stress a person goes through in a bad relationship.
If we understood how precious, short, and fragile life is, we would make the most of it and help others to do the same. Sadly, we don’t value our lives enough.
To make the most of our lives, we should be students of life. We should find answers to questions like: What is life all about? Why are we here? How can we make the most of the life we have? Why do some people flourish while others languish? Where are we going after this life?
I’m glad the Bible gives us clear answers to all the above questions. God has given us all we need to live meaningful lives. In our Discover Life Series, we will explore what life is all about here on earth and how best to prepare for eternity.
Before we dive into the nine biblical truths about life, here is how Merriam-Webster dictionary[1] defines life:
- “the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body.”
- “a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings.”
- “spiritual existence transcending physical death”
- “the period from birth to death”
What the dictionary doesn’t tell us is who the source of life is and what the purpose of life is. We’ll find out in a moment.
Time Is Your Life
Here on earth, we measure our lives by time (seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, months, years), whereas eternity has no time.
Because time is your life, time wasted is a life wasted. Here are a few signs of wasting your life without realizing it;
- not taking good care of your health. When your health struggles, you’ll die before your time or spend every penny to gain it back.
- not spending time with loved ones. When they’re gone, you’ll have missed the opportunity to connect and build memories with them.
- not investing time in growing in the knowledge of God and abiding in Christ, which has benefits here on earth and in eternity.
- not spending time on things that add value to your life. How much do you spend on entertainment and social media? When something you do doesn’t add value to your life, it’s taking time away from what could add value.
- not spending your time and money to help or serve others. When you come to death, you’ll realize that all your accumulated wealth was a big mistake. Give now while you still have life. Store your treasures in heaven through loving and giving to people.
- spending hours or months in anger, unforgiveness, worry, or bitterness because of someone or a situation. Why allow someone or an experience you have no control over to ruin your life?
Our days are few; therefore, we should be wise and make the most of every day.
9 Biblical Truths About Life
#1: God The Father, Son, & Spirit Are The Giver & Sustainer Of Life
The Bible opens with this verse;
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)
If you put God out of the picture, life doesn’t exist. If we have life, then there must be a life giver. And if there is a life-giver, He has the right and interest to tell how to live. After all, He must have had a reason for creating us.
The Psalmist wrote;
“For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.”
(Psalm 36:9)
Apostle John wrote;
“For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
…Jesus answered,
“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.”
(John 6:33, 35-36)
Only God, who gives life, has the right to take life. Even though each of us is responsible for our lives, we also have no right to take our own lives. Learn more about death and suicide in our book, Overcome the Fear of Death.
#2: Human Life Has Two Aspects: The Physical & The Spiritual
Physical food sustains physical or material life (the body), and the Word of God (commandments, promises, and principles) gives and sustains spiritual or immaterial life (the inner person). (Psalm 119:93, John 6:63)
Interestingly, the Word of God also sustains physical life. King Solomon wrote;
“Hold on to instruction; do not let go.
Guard it, for it is your life.
For they are life to those who find them, and health to the whole body.”
(Proverbs 4:13, 22)
Because the Word of God is life, those who teach it can either bring life or death.
The Bible says;
“The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one from the snares of death.”
(Proverbs 13:14)
Physical life as we know it is temporary. Until Christ returns, humans are born and die. The good news is that for Christians, there is a sure hope of resurrection by the same power that raised Christ from death. (John 11:25-26)
Christians don’t die when their heart stops; they sleep, and Christ will awaken them at His return.
#3: Physical Life Is In The Blood
Every life is sacred, born or unborn. God created us in His image and likeness. He created blood, which gives life to our physical bodies.
The Bible says;
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for your souls upon the altar; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.”
(Leviticus 17:11)
The blood of animals atoned for the sins of those in the Old Testament until Jesus Christ came as a man, lived among us, and shed His blood on the cross. As the good Shepherd, He laid down His life for us. (John 10:11-17)
We shall study the significance, preciousness, and power of Christ’s blood in the book Believe The True Gospel.
#4: Spiritual Life Springs From The Heart, Spirit, Or Inner Person
Who you are on the inside is more important than how you look on the outside. You didn’t choose your physique, but you can choose the state of your heart and the content of your mind.
King Solomon wrote;
“Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”
(Proverbs 4:22-23)
The majority of people neglect the inner person, yet it determines the choices we make, the habits we develop, and our eternal destiny. That means one must have a heart transformation to manifest godly behaviour in thoughts, speech, and actions. (Mark 7:20-23)
Jesus said;
“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure, and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.
(Matthew 12:33-35)
Only Christ can transform our lives, cleanse our conscience, and give us the presence and power of His Spirit.
#5: God Gives Us A Choice Between Life & Death
One of the riskiest yet greatest gifts God has given us is free will. With it, we can submit and obey Him, or we can rebel and live for ourselves. The choice is ours.
God told the Israelites to make a choice. The same chance He gave them, He gives us today saying;
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing
and cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
and that you may love the LORD your God, obey Him, and hold fast to Him. For He is your life,
and He will prolong your life in the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers,
to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
(Deuteronomy 30:19-20)
“But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
(Matthew 7:14)
The Israelites refused to choose life. The religious leaders of Jesus’ time refused to believe in Him. Will you choose Christ? Will you believe and live for Him all the days of your life? (John 5:39-40)
#6: SIN Destroys Life
If you understood how much sin stinks in God’s sight and how much damage it does to us, we’d want nothing to do with it. Sadly, we play with it and suffer the consequences.
As we shall see in the book Believe The Truth Gospel, sin brought death into our reality. The Bible talks about the path of life and the path of death. When life that comes from God is absent, death is present.
Humanity’s sins make life hard. The diseases, toil, heartbreaks, death, and other evils we see in the world today are the result of sin. Much of it will not change until Christ returns, but in the meantime, and as long as we live, we can choose the path of life as revealed to us in the Bible.
Listen to what King Solomon wrote about those who find biblical wisdom:
“Now therefore, my sons, listen to me,
for blessed are those who keep my ways.
Listen to instruction and be wise;
do not ignore it.
Blessed is the man who listens to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at the posts of my doorway.
For whoever finds me finds life
and obtains the favor of the LORD.
But he who fails to find me harms himself;
all who hate me love death.”
(Proverbs 8:32-36)
Only life in God, which comes from His knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, can preserve and save us from sin, death, and hell. (Proverbs 12:28, 14:27, 15:24, 16:22, Ecclesiastes 7:12)
Therefore, sin kills and destroys both the physical and spiritual life. Because we were spiritually dead in sin, Jesus Christ came to restore and give us new life in Him. We have an abundance of life because we have Christ’s life flowing through us as we abide in Him. Though our physical bodies die, God will raise them again.
#7: God Orchestrates The Seasons Of Our Lives
King Solomon said there is a time for everything under the sun. One of those times is the time to be born and a time to die. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)
Did you know that sin shortens life? The early generation of human beings lived for thousands of years, but because of man’s wickedness, God kept chopping off our years.
Life passes so quickly that by old age, people often don’t feel old and can’t believe their lives are about to end.
Now, long life is a gift, not a guarantee. Sometimes the righteous are young, and the wicked can live long. But we can be certain that it goes well for the godly because God holds their lives in his hand. (Proverbs 11:30)
Whether we live a short or a long life, what matters is making the most of each day God gives us. When we learn to number our days or realize how brief life is, we gain a heart of wisdom. We stop wasting our lives! (Psalms 90:12)
And because our times or seasons are in God’s hands, we should trust Him to accomplish His purposes in our lives in His way and His time. Every day of your life is written in His book about you. (Psalms 31:15, 139:16)
If you trust God, don’t worry about tomorrow. Trust and obey Him today. That’s your duty. Leave the details of tomorrow to Him.
#8: Life Is A Test
Tests of life bring out what we know and what we’re made of. When trials or tough times squeeze us, how we respond shows who we are on the inside.
In life, people and situations will test our character, servanthood, stewardship, faithfulness, love, and patience, among other godly virtues.
Those who pass the tests will be rewarded and entrusted with even more responsibilities. Those who fail the test will be punished and lose whatever they had in the first place.
The Bible says;
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial,
because when he has stood the test,
he will receive the crown of life that
God has promised to those who love Him.
(James 1:12)
#9: We Must Die To Self To Have Life In Christ
Many people desire to have life in Christ and to enter heaven, but few are willing to pay the price. The gift of salvation is free yet costly.
Jesus gave up His life for our sake. He set an example for us so we can give up our lives for His sake. He said;
“’If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world,
yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
(Matthew 16:24-26)
People sell their souls to money, possessions, pleasure, and Satan. But none of those things can satisfy, because God created us to find meaning in life through Him and by Him.
Are you willing to die to self? You will learn how to do this in our Discover Life Series.
Because of our sin and rebellion against God, we deserve to die and be separated from a holy God forever. But He sent Jesus Christ, who brought us salvation. We have God’s Word to know His will. And we have a Helper to empower us to live a godly life.
What excuse do you have for not living for Christ? What will be your eternal fate if you miss Christ?
Jesus said;
“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.”
(John 5:24)
“And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
(1 John 5:11-12)
Do you have the Son? Do you have eternal life? If Jesus returned this very minute, would He take you with Him?
Through Jesus Christ;
- Our thirst is quenched from His spring of water of life. (Revelation 21:6)
- We will be granted the right to eat from the tree of life in God’s paradise. (Revelation 2:7)
- Our names are written in the Book of Life, so we never have to experience eternal damnation in the lake of fire God has prepared for the devil and his demons. (Revelation 20:15)
